Indian IT Stocks Outperform Despite Market Weakness
The Indian equity market has remained under pressure due to rising crude oil prices, escalating geopolitical tensions and rupee depreciation. Over the past month, the Nifty 50 declined 2.75%, while the Sensex fell 1.74%, reflecting continued weakness in the broader market.
However, the Indian IT sector has emerged as a notable outperformer during this period. Despite concerns over the long-term impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on traditional IT services businesses, the sector has delivered returns of more than 12% over the past month. Strong Q2FY27 results from several leading
Indian IT companies have also improved investor sentiment and raised hopes of a recovery in the sector.
Global AI and Semiconductor Stocks Face Selling Pressure
Interestingly, global markets with significant exposure to AI and semiconductor companies have witnessed considerable weakness over the past month. The NASDAQ declined 4.5%, while South Korea’s KOSPI fell
21.15%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 8.58%, Taiwan’s market fell 3.68% and Japan’s Nikkei dropped
3.25%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index also remained under pressure.
Several major semiconductor and AI-related companies, including NVIDIA, Micron Technology, Broadcom
and Intel, experienced selling pressure during this period. This weakness has raised questions about
whether investors are reassessing the valuations and growth expectations of AI and semiconductor
companies after their strong performance.
Indian IT Companies Deliver Strong Returns
In contrast to the weakness in global AI and semiconductor stocks, leading Indian IT companies have
delivered strong returns over the past month.
TCS: Up 19.1%, HCL Technologies: Up 11.91%, Tech Mahindra: Up 17.9%, Infosys: Up 12.04%,
Wipro: Up 14.70%
The broad-based recovery across major Indian IT stocks suggests that investor interest in traditional IT
services companies may be improving. Their latest quarterly results, business outlook and valuations could
be contributing to this renewed interest. However, the sustainability of this trend will depend on revenue
growth, deal wins, client spending, margin performance and the pace at which these companies adapt to
AI-led changes in the technology industry.
Is This the Beginning of an AI and Semiconductor Reversal?
It is too early to conclude that the recent weakness in global AI and semiconductor stocks marks the
beginning of a sustained reversal. While these stocks have faced selling pressure, buying interest has also
emerged at lower levels, indicating that investors continue to see opportunities in the sector.
Comments from NVIDIA’s CEO regarding strong demand for AI-related products further suggest that the
underlying demand outlook remains significant. However, strong demand alone does not guarantee that
current valuations are justified or that share prices will recover immediately.
From an investment perspective, the recent divergence between Indian IT stocks and global AI and
semiconductor companies is worth monitoring. Traditional IT companies may benefit from improving
sentiment, attractive valuations and opportunities to integrate AI into their service offerings. At the same
time, they face structural challenges as AI changes software development, outsourcing models and client
spending patterns.
The recent outperformance of Indian IT stocks indicates a possible improvement in sector sentiment, but
one month’s returns are not sufficient to establish a sustained recovery. Similarly, the correction in global
AI and semiconductor stocks does not necessarily signal the end of the AI growth cycle.
Investors should focus on earnings visibility, valuation comfort, deal conversion, client spending and the
ability of companies to monetise AI opportunities. The key question is not simply whether AI or traditional
IT will outperform, but which companies can convert technological changes into sustainable earnings
growth.
The recent divergence between Indian IT stocks and global AI and semiconductor companies presents an
important trend to monitor. However, confirmation of a durable reversal will require sustained earnings
growth, stronger business outlooks and continued price performance over the coming quarters
